Our Mission
Developing citizens of character.
This is the core mission of Durango High School’s SFJROTC program. More than just an elective, this program empowers cadets with leadership experience, aerospace education, and hands-on training that prepares them for success in any career path.

1 of 10 in the United States
As one of only 10 Space Force JROTC units in the nation, our cadets don’t just learn, they lead. Unlike traditional classroom settings, SFJROTC cadets run the program themselves, overseeing operations, training, and competitive teams.

Program Goals

Stronger leadership and teamwork skills.

A better understanding of civic responsibility.

A foundation for careers in STEM, management, or military service.

Experience in public speaking, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
Vision Statement
Our vision is to prepare students for life after high school through a structured, student-led environment that develops:
- Confidence in leadership and decision-making
- Personal responsibility and accountability
- Judgment and critical thinking skills
- Attention to detail and discipline
- Interpersonal and communication skills

While the program uses a military framework, it is not a military recruitment program, instead, it serves as a structured leadership experience that benefits cadets regardless of the career path they choose.

Core Values
The SFJROTC program is built on a foundation of excellence, respect, and responsibility. Every cadet is expected to uphold these values both inside and outside the program.

Connection
We are connected by a common purpose greater than ourselves. We are stronger together than we are individually. We seek our diversity and engage inclusively knowing that harnessing different perspectives fuels innovation. We strengthen our teams and the security of our nation by treating everyone with dignity, empathy, and respect. Our approach allows us to tap into the best that each person has to offer.
Commitment
We are committed to the pursuit of mastery of ourselves, our professions, and our domain, knowing this is a lifelong journey and not a destination. We see opportunities to learn and grow with the help of our team where others see challenges and obstacles. We will make best use of the diverse and unique strengths of our teammates to achieve feats considered impossible by our adversaries.
Courage
We do what needs to be done and say what needs to be said because it is right. We are steadfast and we hold to our convictions. We have the power to choose regardless of circumstances. We are biased toward action, accepting risk when necessary to secure and defend our domain. We act and speak fearlessly knowing our teammates and leadership are unwavering in their support.
