Our cadets don’t just dream big, they achieve big. Here are just a few stories of how SFJROTC helped cadets unlock their potential:

The JROTC program to me is like a family. During my time through the program I met many amazing people and built many connections who I can consider the closet people ever. The most exciting thing is the opportunities it gives you throughout the year like field trips or community service hours.

The program means a lot to me. I say this because I’ve been in it for 3 years going onto my fourth and I’ve developed connections with the people and instructors. Some of the things I have gotten out of the program was lessons on how to do real world things such as how to do taxes, how to manage my money and how to buy a car and so much more. Things that excite me about ROTC are performing in assemblies, community services and the people.

This program has become a big part of my life and has shaped the person I am today. SFJROTC has so much to offer like academic teams, fitness teams, drill teams and a lot of other opportunities. I truly believe that there is something for everyone here. I found my place when I joined UDT my freshman year and then went on to take different leadership roles as the years went by. My experience here has helped me push myself to my limits and taught me resilience, leadership, discipline and so many other life skills that I will continue to use once I graduate. ROTC has helped me grown as a person and instilled in me a confidence that I didn’t have walking in freshman year. Being my last year here I’m excited to see how it will play out especially with me taking on the role space delta.

At first, I saw ROTC as just another credit to help me graduate. However, during my first and second years in the program, I realized it was much more than just a class. ROTC introduced me to friendships I never knew I needed. I met incredible cadets, many of who have already graduated. But we still keep in touch. The program also taught me the importance of discipline and valuable life skills, such as public speaking and teamwork.

Before joining ROTC, I felt lost and unsure about my future. I didn’t know what path to take after graduation. Now, as a senior, I have a clear goal: I want to serve in the United States Navy. My passion is to support service members and veterans by focusing on mental health. I want to help reduce homelessness and address the many challenges veterans face as they transition to civilian life. I want them to feel seen and heard, because I know what it’s like to feel ignored when reaching out for help.

The instructors in our ROTC program have had a major impact on me. They teach with patience, respect, and a genuine desire to help cadets succeed. Master Sergeant especially inspired me to pursue a military career. Seeing her thrive in a male-dominated field showed me that I can do the same. Chief and Colonel sparked my interest in space exploration. My favorite lessons were about rockets, especially the hands on project where we built and launched our own on the soccer field. My call sign, “Rocket Girl,” is inspired by that passion.

As I begin my final year of high school, I’m grateful I chose ROTC as both my PE credit and elective. The physical training and drill sessions not only strengthened me physically, but also built my mental resilience. ROTC helped shape me into a stronger, more focused, and more determined person, ready for the next chapter in life.

ROTC can be challenging, but everyone learns at a different pace and in different ways. What matters most is not backing down from the obstacles you face. Our instructors didn’t just assign lessons or run drills because it was part of the job. They did it to help strengthen us mentally and physically.

I really like drill and how committed we are to doing it and executing it

This program means the world to me. In all my years of being in school I’ve never had a single program that has such a strong connection considering no one knew each other to start. I’m glad that I joined NV941 and I’ll continue to participate until I graduate.

As an administrator at Durango HS, I’m proud that we’re home to Nevada’s only Space Force JROTC program, one of just ten in the entire country. I’ve seen firsthand that this program is so much more than uniforms and drills; it’s about helping our students grow as leaders, work as a team, and push themselves further than they thought possible. Our cadets get hands-on STEM experiences like building satellites and launching high-altitude balloons, all while developing the discipline, confidence, and problem-solving skills that will serve them for life. Our instructors bring years of real-world Air Force experience, and I see every day how committed they are to mentoring students. Whether our cadets choose a military path or something completely different, I know they leave Durango ready to lead, ready to serve, and ready to succeed.

NV-941 is a wonderful program, I have been in the program 3 years now and have made friends that feel like family within the corp. This corp provides opportunities for those that work hard for them, and teaches the cadets discipline and prepares them for when they graduate. Our staff is in charge of our finances, logistics and so much more within the corp which helps to prepare ourselves with work. I have done nothing but enjoy my time here in the corp as a cadet in the NV-941 SFJROTC program.

This program means a lot to me throughout the two years here I have made lots of memories and friends within the corp. I have gotten a lot out of this program, discipline, experience in an organization, to perform briefings and speeches in front of an audience, and the friends and people of the corp. There are many things that excite me about this corp; seeing my friends in it, drill, and the fun PT days. Those only being a few. I would always encourage people to at the very least give it a try since in my time here the friends I made feel more like a family.

Joining ROTC is genuinely one of the best decisions I’ve made. Corp nights are always fun and I’ve made lifelong friendships!!

Gia D.

What I gained from this program were friendships that created lifelong memories.
